The naïve quality of the lines of this design refers to the pair of antique mechanical apple-picking toys that inspired it. They are small pieces from a huge collection of mostly 20th century artefacts now held by the National Trust at The Hardmans' House in Rodney Street, Liverpool. This is an elegant Georgian property, authentically preserved in its 1950s state, which served as both home and busy photographic studio for the renowned portrait painter Edward Chambré Hardman and his wife, business partner and fellow photographer, Margaret.
