The design of this wallcovering, with a very realistic trompe l'oeil effect, is taken from the image of a royal velvet curtain in a prestigious historic palace. The marvellous curtain is related to that of the enchanted workshop described in Arthur Saint-Léon's ballad Coppélia (1870), where the eponymous protagonist is a beautiful mechanical doll, whose maker jealously guards in his shop. Printed on two different backings - silk/lurex and velvet - this wallcovering is completed by a range of rich decorations developed to highlight the joints.
