FABRICS Jaali C0571
Jaali is an architectural fabric of wool upholstery designed by Doshi Levien, which merges patterns and textures with an intriguing effect. Seen close, it reveals a thin grid of hexagonal forms in the form of a network. However, when seen from the distance, this pattern acquires the expression of a textured structure.
The name of the word hindi for network or grid, Jaali is built with two threads of a single color. The contrast between the clearest tone threads used for pattern and flat and smooth surface creates a three-dimensional set of lights and shadows. Curiously, this infuses lightweight and deep tissue.
Although without direction, the drop-shaped forms of the Jaali pattern add another dimension to the design. They unite to create a subtle sense of weight and graphic movement.
Jaali comes in 20 color combinations, carefully selected from 1500 woven samples. To develop them, Doshi Levien took the color scales of Lila and Raas, two other textiles that have designed for Kvadrat, as a starting point. To complete the palette, the designers proposed to create fresh and unexpected neutral colors.
Nipa Doshi: “We wanted to add colors that add something new to the Kvadrat collection, but without being noisy or dominant. We want people to use the colors we create, so we present them slowly, in a subtle way.”
Jaali combines particularly well with Lila and Raas, but also works well with the other textiles from the Kvadrat collection. It is suitable for public and private spaces.
