For thousands of years, these majestic creatures have represented the best omens in oriental culture. The artists of the Lladró Haute Porcelain workshop have recreated this ancient tradition in these limited-series pieces richly decorated with lustres and various textures and finishes. These lions, inspired by the traditional bronze, iron or granite statues that flank the gates of palaces, temples and noble houses in different Eastern countries, are presented in pairs and protect these buildings from evil spirits. Seen from the front, the male stands on the right and guards the structure, represented by the ball he holds with his paw, while the female stands on the left and watches over its inhabitants. This lion forms a pair with the guardian lioness (red) and there are two other decorative versions of them. The decoration is dominated by warm colours, alternating orangey-yellows, reddish and earth tones. The artists of the Alta Porcelana workshop recreate and embellish every detail of the piece, such as the elaborate ornamentation of the skirts and breastplates, the introduction of the necklace as a decorative element or the profuse modelling of the manes and tails. A true filigree work that makes these impressive sculptures a work halfway between millenary tradition and author's creation.
