Inspired by the traditional Japanese festival of Tango no Sekku (Children's Day), this amusing piece depicts a little boy riding on a large carp in bright and cheerful colours. The carp is a reference to the koinobori or satsuki-nobori flags, traditional fish-shaped emblems with which the Japanese decorate houses and buildings since April in honour of their children in the hope that they will grow up strong and healthy.
